Mark Zukerberg shared Meta’s vision for the Metaverse.

What will be the new company name of Facebook? Facebook plans to change its name as part of an extensive rebranding move to be the parent company of all social networking platforms. According to recent publications on the Verge, Mark Zuckerberg aspires to be the builder of the future 3D Internet vision – The Metaverse. 

What is the Metaverse?

The term Metaverse was coined in Neal Stephenson’s 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, where humans, as avatars, interact with each other and software agents bots, in a 3D virtual space that uses the metaphor of the real world. In the acknowledgments section following the text of Snow Crash, Stephenson wrote:

The words “avatar” (in the sense it is used here) and “Metaverse” are my inventions, which I came up with when I decided that existing words (such as “virtual reality”) were simply too awkward to use.

Concepts related to the Metaverse appear in Si-Fi books, movies, and TV series like Matrix Movie Series, Ready Player One, and Black Box to name a few. Mostly they picture a dystopian and bad future for Mankind.

The word ‘Meta’ comes from ancient Greek. It meant “beyond,” “after,” or “behind.” In epistemology and everyday use, the prefix ‘meta’ refers to a higher level of abstraction of its category. 

Douglas Hofstadter popularized this meaning of the “META” in his 1979 book Gödel, Escher, Bach. The book, which I highly recommend, deals with self-reference and strange loops. However, it was influential in many computer-related subcultures. Moreover, it may be responsible for the popularity of the prefix, for its use as a solo term. 

Meta (dot) com Who is?

Who appears on a domain called meta (dot) com? Currently no one. But this domain is redirected to another domain meta (dot) org. Who appears there? Chan Zuckerberg, wife of Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
